Handmade Soap From The Scottish Borders.

Welcome to Purple Sage Soap Company

Award-Winning Scottish Botanical Luxury - Powered by Plants

Hello, I’m Ann, founder, maker and grower behind Purple Sage Soap Company.

Soap-making and gardening are the two great passions in my life, and Purple Sage was born from bringing them together. From my garden in the beautiful Scottish Borders, I grow many of the flowers, herbs, fruit, vegetables and wild botanicals that inspire and feature in my soaps and skincare. Each bar is handmade in small batches using plant-based ingredients, thoughtfully chosen botanicals and time-honoured techniques.

The result is skincare that helps to gently cleanse and care for your skin, while reflecting a slower, more sustainable way of making.

Rooted in nature, made with intention, and inspired by everyday plants, this is soap with a story. Read more here...

Arrived quickly and prettily wrapped. Works a treat, I can comb wet hair and doesn't leave hair lank like other conditioner bars I have tried.

Producing soap and natural skincare products in small batches offers several benefits:

  1. Quality Control: Small batch production allows for meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that each product meets the highest quality standards. This hands-on approach enables us to monitor every step of the production process, from sourcing ingredients to packaging, resulting in superior products.
  2. Freshness: By manufacturing in small batches, we can maintain the freshness and potency of our products. This means that you receive skincare items at their peak effectiveness, as they haven't been sitting on shelves for extended periods.
  3. Customisation: Small batch production allows us to be more flexible and responsive to customer feedback and preferences. We can easily adjust formulations, experiment with new ingredients, and tailor products to meet specific needs, ensuring a personalised experience for our customers.
  4. Sustainability: Producing in small batches minimizes waste and reduces our environmental footprint. We can better manage inventory levels, avoiding excess stock and unnecessary packaging. Additionally, sourcing ingredients locally whenever possible further supports sustainability efforts.
  5. Craftsmanship: Small batch production allows us to maintain a high level of craftsmanship and artisanal quality in our products. Each batch is carefully crafted with passion and dedication, resulting in skincare items that reflect our commitment to excellence and authenticity.

Overall, producing in small batches allows us to prioritise quality, freshness, customisation, sustainability, and craftsmanship, ultimately delivering exceptional skincare products that our customers can trust and enjoy.

Cold Process Soap Making:

  1. Preservation of Nutrients: Cold process soap making involves mixing oils and lye at low temperatures, which helps to preserve the natural properties and nutrients of the ingredients. This results in a gentle and nourishing soap that is beneficial for the skin. Using the direct heat method also helps with the preservation of essential oil benefits.
  2. Versatility: Cold process soap making allows for a wide range of creative possibilities. Different oils, butters, essential oils, and botanicals can be incorporated into the soap recipe to tailor the product to specific skin types or preferences.
  3. Control over Ingredients: With cold process soap making, we have full control over the ingredients used in the soap. This means we avoid harsh chemicals, artificial fragrances, synthetic additives, and pre-made bases commonly known as melt and pour, creating a more natural and skin-friendly product.
  4. Cure Time: Cold process soap requires a curing period of 4 - 8 weeks, during which excess moisture evaporates and the soap hardens, resulting in a longer-lasting bar. This curing process enhances the quality and longevity of the soap.

At Purple Sage Soap Company, our approach to skincare is rooted in respect for people, animals and the natural world.

All of our products are cruelty-free and are never tested on animals. We focus on plant-based formulations, using thoughtfully chosen botanical ingredients inspired by gardens, wild plants and traditional soap-making practices.

Where appropriate, we may also use responsibly sourced bee by-products, such as honey or beeswax, chosen for their natural properties and their connection to regenerative growing and local ecosystems. These ingredients are used with care and intention, supporting ethical beekeeping and biodiversity rather than intensive animal agriculture.

What This Means for You

Cruelty-free, always
We do not test on animals, and we work with suppliers who share this commitment.

Plant-based at heart
Our formulations prioritise botanical oils, clays, herbs and extracts, chosen to help cleanse, nourish and care for the skin in a gentle, considered way.

Skin-friendly formulations
By focusing on simple, plant-led ingredients, our products are designed to be gentle and approachable, making them suitable for a wide range of skin types, including sensitive skin.

Thoughtful, inclusive choices
Our products are created for people who care about ethical sourcing, sustainability and transparency, whether or not they follow a vegan lifestyle.

A Balanced, Honest Approach

Rather than following strict labels, we choose to work in a way that reflects our values: plant-led, cruelty-free, transparent and regenerative.

This allows us to honour nature in all its forms from plants and soil to pollinators while continuing to create skincare that feels good to use and good to support.

Regenerative Gardening From Soil to Skin

At Purple Sage Soap Company, sustainability starts in the soil.

We take a regenerative approach to gardening, growing and sourcing botanicals in ways that work with nature rather than against it. By focusing on soil health, biodiversity and low-impact growing methods, we aim to create ingredients that are nurtured slowly and responsibly, before they ever make it into a bar of soap.

This hands-on, garden-led approach helps us reduce waste, minimise unnecessary inputs and make thoughtful choices about how our products are created.

What Regenerative Growing Means to Us

  • Caring for soil health so plants can thrive naturally

  • Encouraging biodiversity through flowers, herbs and wild plants

  • Using no-dig and low-intervention gardening methods where possible

  • Growing and sourcing botanicals locally to reduce transport and waste

  • Making the most of what we grow, with minimal surplus and thoughtful reuse

These principles sit alongside our wider commitment to reducing our environmental footprint and working towards a more responsible, lower-impact way of making, including our longer-term aim of moving closer to net zero.

Why This Matters For You and the Planet

Thoughtfully made products

Our soaps and skincare are inspired by everyday plants, herbs and wildflowers grown with care. This slower approach helps us create products that are simple, considered and rooted in nature.

Lower impact, fewer compromises

By growing and sourcing closer to home and making in small batches, we reduce unnecessary waste and transport, supporting a more circular, resource-conscious way of working.

Supporting nature, not stripping it

Regenerative gardening helps protect soil health, supports pollinators and encourages biodiversity, helping nature recover rather than deplete.

A better future, built gradually

When you choose Purple Sage, you’re supporting a business that believes meaningful change happens step by step, through practical action, not grand claims.

A Quiet Commitment

We don’t claim to be perfect but we are committed to learning, improving and making better choices as we grow. Regenerative gardening is at the heart of that journey, shaping how we create, how we give back, and how we work towards a more balanced future.

New for 2026, Purple Sage Soap Company is building charitable giving directly into selected soap collections.

Rather than asking customers to add donations at checkout, a small fixed donation from every bar sold in these collections is donated by Purple Sage Soap Company Ltd to causes that reflect the purpose and story behind each range.

This approach allows us to keep our giving thoughtful, transparent and sustainable, while continuing to grow as a small, independent business.

From 2026, the following soap collections support our chosen charity partners:

Salt Soap Collection — supporting SSAFA Borders

Aromatherapy Soap Collection — supporting Nurture the Borders

Wildflower Soap Collection — supporting The Scottish Donkey Sanctuary

Charitable donations apply to selected soap collections only and are reviewed regularly to ensure they remain appropriate for a small, independent business.
